VCE brings more speed and agility to converged infrastructure

IT organizations are increasingly tasked with offering services on demand that can be rapidly scaled to meet changing requirements as efficiently and economically as possible. Many government organizations are trying to meet these challenges with a converged infrastructure that integrates compute, storage and networking resources as well as virtualization software and infrastructure management applications — all on a single unified platform.
IT managers looking for ways to rapidly deploy infrastructure are skipping the home-built approach and opting for prebuilt, preconfigured solutions, according to market researcher IDC.
VCE, a provider of converged infrastructure technology, is attempting to address this need for deploying business services on demand and at scale with several new tools that expand the company’s Vblock Systems, VCE officials said in a release. Among the new tools are:
The Vblock System 340 incorporates the latest compute, network, storage, data protection and virtualization technologies from VCE investor companies, Cisco, EMC and VMware.
The Vblock Specialized System for High Performance Databases can handle environments that require millions of input/output operations per second (IOPS). It offers scalability to hundreds of terabytes and constant availability, and it can support mixed workloads and multiple database versions.
The Vblock Specialized System for Extreme Applications features all-flash technology with inline data reduction to meet the requirements of the most latency-sensitive environments, such as virtual desktop infrastructures.
VCE Vision Intelligent Operations 2.5 intelligently informs management frameworks about Vblock system configuration and health and offers automated updates of new patches and software releases, proactive scanning, and reporting on release and security compliance. VCE Vision also offers tighter integration with VMware’s vCenter Operations Suite.
VCE Cloud Accelerator Services combine business process, operations and organizational transformation expertise with Vblock Systems’ pre-integrated capabilities for self-service, service management and chargeback.
VCE Vblock is one example of a converged infrastructure widely used in enterprises. NetApp’s FlexPod is another converged infrastructure whose presence in the government continues to grow as agencies deploy private and hybrid cloud infrastructures. The two systems are similar in that they combine compute, networking, storage and virtualization components into a single platform. But the companies take different implementation approaches, with FlexPod offering more opportunity to customize the technology to fit into existing infrastructures and VCE providing a line of pre-configured systems.
