Oracle pulls its cloud into the data center
Connecting state and local government leaders
Oracle's Cloud at Customer offering installs the same hardware, software and operational services available from the Oracle public cloud directly into organizations’ data centers.
Agencies that like the idea of reaping the advantages of the public cloud but face security or regulatory restrictions that make it difficult to leave the data center have a new option with Oracle Cloud at Customer. The on-premise solution installs the same hardware, software and operational services available from the Oracle public cloud directly into organizations’ data centers, behind their firewalls.
The new service gives IT managers choices in where they deploy their enterprise software and -- should an agency later decide that cloud migration is practical -- an easy way to move applications from on-premises to the Oracle Cloud.
The Oracle Cloud at Customer suite delivers a stack that is completely compatible with the Oracle Cloud, the company said, so customers get the same experience as using it in their datacenter as in the Oracle Cloud. It can be used for disaster recovery, elastic bursting or lift-and-shift workload migration and it gives developers an environment where they can rapidly build, test and deploy new applications.
"We bring in a cloud machine, which is basically a replica of our public cloud services, and install it at the customer site," Amit Zavery, senior vice president for the Oracle Cloud Platform told IDG News Service. "Customers can get the infrastructure, the database, all the public cloud services, but behind the firewall."
The identical environments allow users to easily move workloads between on-premises and cloud based on business requirements, using the same toolsets and application programming interfaces.
Customers can choose from a menu of database, integration and infrastructure services, such as elastic compute, elastic block storage, virtual networking, file storage, messaging and identity management. All software and services are compatible with the Oracle Cloud.
Cloud at Customer is a fully managed service offering -- with pricing consistent with the same services in Oracle Cloud -- so organizations subscribe to its services or access them in an elastic metered formula. Oracle is responsible for administering, updating and maintaining the system.
