Virginia to modernize traffic, traveler and road information services

The Department of Transportation is partnering with Iteris for data and video management and distribution.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will be upgrading its traffic, traveler and road information services through a partnership with Iteris, a mobility infrastructure management firm. The company will provide VDOT with platform-as-a-service capabilities, including an extensive data portal, a real-time traveler information system, new incident management tools and upgraded video distribution services.
The goal of the Traffic, Traveler and Road Information Program, according to the September 2020 request for proposals, “is to effectively and efficiently collect and distribute VDOT selected operational data and video services through a common, cloud-based platform to share with internal VDOT users and external stakeholders.” TTRIP would allow VDOT to simplify and expand the real-time delivery of operations data, streamline contracts and services and establish a scalable platform as it evolves.
Data, video and traveler information management and distribution are the core services under the multiyear TTRIP contract that is expected to exceed $20 million, company officials said.
The data service will revise and expand VDOT’s SmarterRoads distribution platform, which provides approved users raw and processed VDOT and third-party transportation data, including information on road conditions, asset information like road signs and signal data. VDOT will use Iteris’ data management tools as the number of datasets, real-time feeds and registered users grow.
The video service will provide access to over 1,600 cameras and video feeds for operational and broadcast use via agency partner and media portals. It will leverage VDOT’s new statewide fiber network to lower operational costs.
To help VDOT and its partners communicate with the travelers in Virginia, traveler information services will offer personalized alerts through website, phone and mobile applications
VDOT will also have an incident command mobile app for field operations staff and a new two-way alert system to reach the public in areas where major events are being held. Iteris will lead a team of subject-matter experts to rearchitect and modernize several transportation operations and content systems.
