George Conway, senior information services analyst with the Lane County, Ore., Information Services Department, said he wants to move the county to an all-Xerox printer shop over the next two years.The county has about 30 Xerox DocuPrint N2125 machines, four Phaser 860s and three Phaser 7700s, and plans to buy up to 100 more Xerox printers next year, Conway said.Departments use the printers to produce color brochures and training materials. The Corrections Department uses the DocuPrint N2125 to print out checks. The printers are easy to configure on the county's Ethernet network, Conway said. New Jersey's Office of Geographic Information Systems this month finished the first part of the Orthophoto Mapping Program project, which will help state agencies reduce costs and improve operations.Aerial photographs taken for the project will provide higher degrees of accuracy and detail in 5,000-foot by 5,000-foot shots of land. The digital photos will be used by state agencies for property assessment, transportation design, permit review, land use planning and emergency management.Officials will scan the shots into digital image files and connect them so the viewer appears to be looking straight down at the ground at every point.The photographs eventually will be put into the state's Spatial Data Clearinghouse and archived at the Earth Resources Observation System data center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker this month issued an executive order setting up a steering committee and project office to oversee the PA Open for Business Web site.The state wants to enhance the site, which promotes online interactions between businesses and the government. The site went online in 1999. It lets businesses register with the state, check the availability of business names and read tutorials on topics such as developing a business plan or record keeping.'Judging from the many e-mails my staff receives from new entrepreneurs delighted with the business registration services available on our PA Open for Business Web site, Internet-based interaction with government is extremely popular,' Schweiker said. 'The PA Open for Business project office will keep Pennsylvania in the vanguard of states offering this service, and that will continue to spur economic development.'The steering committee will include officials from state labor, revenue and economic development offices. The site receives more than 5 million hits a month. The U.S. Small Business Administration's Federal and State Technology Partnership Program offers states funding for technology R&D through the Small Business Innovation research program.
