The National Governors Association awarded grants today valued at $50,000 to five states to implement pilot projects designed to improve information sharing among public safety agencies.

The National Governors Association awarded grants today valued at $50,000 to five states to implement pilot projects designed to improve information sharing among public safety agencies.

The pilot projects in each of the five states ' Alabama, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wisconsin ' will use the National Information Exchange Model to create information exchanges that enhance an area of justice, such as incident reporting or court case management.

NIEM was developed through a partnership between the Justice and Homeland Security departments and is designed to support enterprisewide information exchange standards to help jurisdictions effectively share information during emergencies.

The five states will participate in pilot projects starting this month through May 2008. The NGA's Center for Best Practices will provide the states with technical assistance and conduct two policy workshops where states can share their experiences.

Alabama and Pennsylvania will work on migrating Global Justice XML Data Model exchanges to NIEM-compliant versions. New York will use NIEM to replace its existing rap sheet with a more comprehensive one. Washington will focus on developing technical specifications for law enforcement access to driver photos to help officers in the field better identify people. Wisconsin will develop a NIEM-compliant information exchange to improve the sharing of drug case information across disparate case management systems.

Funding for the grants comes from Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance.
