Connecting state and local government leaders
Headed to the 81st annual National Association of Counties Conference and Exposition in Long Beach, California, this month? Check out our new ebook on U.S. counties.
Later next week, the nation’s county government community—a few thousand public servants and other professionals working with county governments—will be gathering in Long Beach, California, about 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, for the 81st annual National Association of Counties Conference and Exposition.
They’ll be sharing their success stories, discussing their challenges, exchanging ideas and connecting with their colleagues around the nation on important issues. County governments may not get as much attention as state or municipal governments, but the responsibilities that counties have and the services they deliver are critically important.
“From the seemingly mundane, but critical, tasks of road repair, trash collection and building inspections, to fighting fires, performing surgeries and protecting our most vulnerable—people absolutely depend on the work we do,” retiring Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, said in his State of the County Address last November.
“Counties matter,” as many leaders in the NACo community often say.
Route Fifty will be in Long Beach covering the conference, but in advance of the gathering, which will be held July 22-25 at the Long Beach Convention Center, we put together a package of county-focused stories in a new ebook covering topics like the public health authorities preparing for the Zika virus, the opioid abuse epidemic, law enforcement body cameras and rural economic development efforts.
It includes dispatches from Wise County, Virginia; Maricopa County, Arizona; Washington County, Arkansas; Lake County, Illinois; and Santa Cruz County, California, just to name a few. There’s also a backgrounder on Los Angeles County, the host county for the conference and the nation’s most populous county.
The ebook, “At the Center of Everything: The Current Challenges, Great Ideas and Big Issues Shaping U.S. County Governments,” is free and ready to download.
