The president will host a dinner when the National Governors Association is in D.C. next month, and a private sit-down is also expected.
WASHINGTON — U.S. governors have secured a sit-down meeting they wanted with President Trump for the week of the National Governors Association’s annual winter meetings, which is scheduled for Feb. 24-27 in the nation’s capital.
Office hours with White House Cabinet officials were already slated for Feb. 26, according to the agenda. But the evening with Trump and his wife, Melania, and a governors-only meeting with the president the following day, were up in the air.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer confirmed the dinner during Monday’s briefing, segueing from talk of Trump extricating the U.S. from “unacceptable trade deals” like the Trans-Pacific Partnership:
"The White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs has been hard at work making sure all lines of communication are open at all levels of government throughout the country. As of today, the White House has made contact with all governors’ offices in every state and territory and deeper dive conversations on a range of issues have already taken place with 32 governors or their offices. Outreach efforts have touched 22 of 50 state attorney generals, 32 of 50 states secretaries of state, 16 speakers of the house, the leaders of the 10 largest federally recognized tribes, and the leaders of some of the country’s largest counties and municipalities. All have expressed enthusiasm about working with the White House on issues impacting their local communities and families.
The Intergovernmental Affairs Office is also preparing for the National Governors Association meeting in Washington at the end of February, at which the president plans to host a dinner."
NGA spokeswoman Elena Waskey confirmed in an email to Route Fifty that the requested private meeting with Trump the following day is also anticipated.
