Explore Route Fifty’s 2018 Newsmap
Connecting state and local government leaders
From Akron, Ohio, to Yavapai County, Arizona, and countless other places, navigate the year in state and local government news from around the nation.
Happy New Year! As we kick off 2019, I’ve been busy the past week or so pulling together Route Fifty’s annual Newsmap, where I dutifully go through a year’s worth of articles and blog posts that we’ve published and plot them on a map, allowing you to explore the past year in state and local news.
It’s a giant project. The locations pins were not randomly plotted or casually dropped. In most cases, there’s something from a story that ties it to a particulation location. There are more than 400 location pins, many of which—often at city halls or state capitol buildings—that feature multiple Route Fifty stories. It’s not all perfect, but the 2018 Route Fifty Newsmap should give you a good sense for the geography of our coverage in the past year. Although we have a small staff, we do cover stories and feature news from a good cross-section of the nation, from urban cities and counties to rural jurisdictions. (You won’t, however, find Route Fifty’s federal and congressional coverage on this year’s map—that would have added a few hundred more location pins and stories.)
Explore the map and zoom in. You may stumble across Route Fifty stories you missed earlier in the year or learn something new about a place you’re unfamiliar with. The United States is a big country and the news landscape of state and local government is complex.
Check out the map below and below that, scroll through an alphabetical listing of locations that caught our attention in 2018.
