The States Where Vaccination Rates are Highest

Northeastern states lead the nation with at least 65% of residents receiving one vaccine shot, CDC figures show. Several western states also have high numbers.
There are 13 states that have 65% or more of their residents 18 years and older vaccinated with at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine and seven have adult populations that have 55% or more fully vaccinated, according to data released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
CDC data on vaccines delivered and administered is updated daily. The numbers show Vermont leads in the percentage of residents (77.6%) 18 and older with at least one shot, with Massachusetts and Hawaii following at 75%. Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut are close behind with at least 70% of their adult populations receiving at least one shot.
According to the CDC data, a majority of the states with 65%-plus vaccination rates are in the Northeast, including Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. California, Hawaii, New Mexico and Washington -- all in the West -- are the only other states with 65% and above rates.
Furthermore, states that have high one-shot rates also tend to have higher two-dose rates. Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New Mexico are states with at least 55% of their age 18 and older population fully vaccinated.
The numbers are an indication states are getting a larger share of their population vaccinated. There are plenty of states looking to hit the 65% threshold, according to media reports. Along with businesses, state and local governments are offering a growing variety of perks to get residents hesitant about the shots to roll up their sleeves, including lottery tickets and hunting licenses.
Nationwide, 60% of those 18 years and older have had at least one dose of the Covid vaccine, while 47% of that demographic is fully vaccinated.
Overall, there have been close to 273 million vaccine doses administered in the country. The CDC notes that total doses administered are based on the location where the vaccine was given, and that in limited cases, people might get a vaccine outside of their place of residency.
The data represents all vaccine partners including jurisdictional partner clinics, retail pharmacies, long-term care facilities, dialysis centers, Federal Emergency Management Agency and Health Resources and Services Administration partner sites, and federal entity facilities.
