Most and Least Fashionable Cities in the U.S.

New York City ranks as the most fashionable city while Wichita, Kansas comes in last, according to a recent report.
New York City takes the top spot for America’s most fashionable city, while Wichita, Kansas ranks as the least fashion-forward city, according to Finder.
Cities following New York City as the most fashionable are:
- Los Angeles
- Oakland, California
- Boston
- Chicago
- Philadelphia
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- New Orleans
- Washington, D.C.
- San Francisco
- San Diego
- Buffalo, New York
- Baton Rouge, Louisiana
- Miami
- Baltimore
According to FashionUnited, New York City and Los Angeles have competed for the top spot for years. However, New York always seems to come out on top, and was even named the top global fashion capital of the decade, says the Global Language Monitor.
“New York is a window to the world—most of the companies have an office here. Editors, photographers, stylists are based here; there is a continuous movement in the industry,” Carmen Castiñeira, communications manager for the fashion designer Derek Lam, told FashionUnited.
Following Wichita as the least fashionable cities in the U.S. per capita are:
- Laredo, Texas
- Lincoln, Nebraska
- Anchorage, Alaska
- Lubbock, Texas
- Columbus, Ohio
- Corpus Christi, Texas
- Fort Wayne, Indiana
- El Paso, Texas
- Colorado Springs, Colorado
- Phoenix
- Toledo, Ohio
- Indianapolis
- Spokane, Washington
- Fayetteville, North Carolina
Finder also calculated the most fashionable cities per capita. On this list Oakland, California ranked as No. 1 for most fashionable cities per capita. Following Oakland as most fashionable cities per capita are Honolulu; Orlando, Florida; New Orleans; and Norfolk, Virginia.
To identify the most fashionable cities in America, Finder looked at the number of fashion-related establishments in each city along with keyword search trends for the top fashion items in 2020. Finder also looked at U.S. cities with a population of at least 200,000, according to the 2010-2019 City and Town Population Totals from the U.S. Census Bureau.
