Multimedia and portability advance in '97
Happy computing, '97 style. The year begins with good news for power users. Intel Corp. last week released its newest Pentiums that include multimedia instructions-thanks to the much-heralded MMX chip. There's little software yet that invokes the new instructions, but even existing applications will run an average of 10 percent faster. Expect to see desktop and portable systems from all the major vendors.

Q. "What's a "cookie'? Should I be worried about it?" A. Do you like chocolate chip? OK, so it's not that kind of cookie. When you visit a World Wide Web site, sometimes the server asks your browser for information--what operating system runs on your PC, which browser you're using, recent sites you've visited and even your e-mail address.
200-Mhz Compaq Desktop can compete with some of the best
In its entry-level Deskpro 2000, Compaq Computer Corp. has a winner. The GCN Lab received an early unit just off the production line. It came with a 200-MHz Pentium CPU and 32M of extended-data-out RAM but lacked the eight-speed CD-ROM drive that's available on other Deskpros for about $249 extra.
Agencies' technology buying reflexes are faster than ever
The government no longer waits six months or a year before buying new kinds of hardware and software, an exclusive Government Computer News survey shows. With more than a third of government respondents running Windows 95 and almost nine out of 10 accessing the World Wide Web, it's clear that the government is hip to the latest and greatest.
Features pump up slim, nimble notebooks
Thin is in. Notebook computers are slimming down, while their hard drives are ballooning. In the next year, the notebook marketplace will be hopping--some manufacturers will introduce a new portable every three months as they phase out older models. Intel Corp.'s 150-MHz Pentium for notebooks will make a debut, but don't expect much boost to processing power. The bus on a Pentium 133 runs at 66 MHz; the Pentium 150 will be on a 60-MHz
It's so far, so good for nexar, the new kid on the PC block
Government buyers want inexpensive, speedy and expandable PCs. The Nexar covers those three bases, but it has no track record yet for reliability. Its maker pushed into the market only recently [GCN, June 10, Page 51]. But in two months of GCN Lab testing, the Nexar never gave us a moment's worry.
Windows NT beta rolls along, despite some driver problems
It might take the patience of Job to install the first beta release of Microsoft's Windows NT 4.0 operating system, but perseverance is worthwhile. NT 4.0 Workstation grafts the popular Windows 95 look and feel onto a powerful, true 32-bit environment. I found that CD-ROM installation went almost flawlessly on some test machines but failed even to begin writing to the hard drive on others. The problem, it turned out, was drivers and confusion between
Media module travels light, flies right on the sleek HiNote Ultra
Anotebook PC that weighs only 4 pounds has a heavy advantage. We've praised the HiNote Ultra for just that, and for its sleek, attentive design [GCNMarch 20, Page 1]. If the Ultra had a CD-ROM drive, it would come even closer to notebook nirvana. Digital now has put a double- or quad-speed drive and two speakers into a thoughtfully constructed add-on, the Mobile Media Module.
Graphics add-on for Office 95 first to exploit Binders power
Micrografx Inc. has the first graphics suite out of the blocks that's not only Microsoft Windows 95-compatible but Office 95 Binder-compliant, too. What does that mean? If you're an Office 95 user, it means you can store graphics-rich compound document components together in one file and print everything in flawless order.
It still can't read, but Newton MessagePad's a great organizer
The first time I wrote "Testing" on the Newton MessagePad 120, it decided I meant "Entire." My second attempt was successful, except the capital T appeared as t. Handwriting recognition--or the lack of it--has brought undeserved ridicule onto Apple's personal digital assistant. When I looked beyond the writing on the screen, I found the best personal information management software I've seen on any platform.
